RNLI Crews are bound by
the highway code like every other motorist on the road.
When our pagers are activated we have no indication of how
serious the situation is. It could be a call to tow a broken
down vessel, or a
-
-
more urgent call to rescue
a small child from imminent danger.
-
It is imperative that we get to the lifeboat as quickly as
possible as every minute does count. You can help by
following some of these
-
-
suggestions:
-
(a) All RNLI crews carry yellow placards to display in their
car windows (see below). One is purposely written in reverse
so you can read it
-
-
in your mirror.
(b) We can also use our headlights to let you know of our
presence, so if you do see a car coming behind you with its
head lights
-
-
flashing, please do not
assume it is a joy rider, but maybe consider it could be one
of us on the way to a rescue.
(c) If you do see a RNLI Crewmember in a car behind you
displaying their 'boards', then when it is safe to do so,
indicate and pull in, or
-
-
slow down and let them
past.
(d) Due to UK legislation we are not allowed to use sirens,
blue lights or green lights as we are not designated as
'Rescue Personnel' until
-
-
we are at the boathouse.
