Visit from Spain
Hola

Hi
I'm going to write this e-mail in Spanish.
I really liked Clacton base.
I met a volunteer (sorry do not remember his name) and he was really very friendly and attentive, the barrier was the language, not each other. Lucky that my phone had a translator.
I really liked the way everything was organized, both the volunteers and equipment.
I would like to send greetings to all Clacton RNLI team from Spain and congratulations for the great work they are doing.
By the way, thank you very much for the details offered to me, I will be proud to put the RNLI sticker on my car.

VOLUNTEERS who save lives at sea are inviting residents and visitors to an open day at Clacton lifeboat station.
Members of the Clacton RNLI crew will be on hand to talk to visitors about the two lifeboats, the Atlantic 85 and D Class inshore lifeboats, which operate from the Martello Bay station.
They will also be talking about the work of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution charity.
A spokesman for the charity said: “The RNLI volunteers at Clacton are on standby 24 hours a day 365 days a year to go to the assistance of those who need help at sea.
“Already this year the Clacton lifeboats have been called to 36 incidents where people have required assistance at sea.”
The open days will take place on August 22 and August 23

A NEW book detailing the history of Clacton lifeboat has been written by the editor of an international shipping magazine.
The book by Nicholas Leach, called Clacton-on-Sea Lifeboats, has been put on sale at the lifeboat stations shops at Martello Bay and on Clacton Pier.
It tells the story of the Clacton station, its lifeboats and volunteer crews from 1878 up to the present.
Mr Leach, who is based in Lichfield, Staffordshire, has written extensively about lifeboats and has compiled more than 25 histories of lifeboat stations. He is also editor of international shipping magazine Ships Monthly.
Clacton-on-Sea lifeboat station has a long and proud history of saving lives at sea, with the first lifeboat was sent to the station in 1878.
The first motor lifeboat was the 45ft Watson Albert Edward, which was completed in 1901 and converted to motor power in 1911 at a time when the RNLI’s motorisation programme was in its infancy. The pioneering craft went on to save 277 lives
Three other motor lifeboats were stationed at Clacton, with the last, the 37ft Oakley Valentine Wyndham-Quin, being withdrawn in the early 1980s.
It was replaced by an Atlantic 21 inshore lifeboat, and Atlantic ILBs have served the station with distinction ever since.
Since 2006 operations have been conducted from an impressive purpose built lifeboat station, which houses both lifeboats.
The book contains historic photos of all of the station’s lifeboats and lifeboat houses, as well as crew members past and present, as well as a history of rescues.
The book, which costs £4.99, is available from the RNLI shop at Clacton Lifeboat Station in Hastings Avenue, the new shop on Clacton Pier or by calling Peter Edwards on 01255 425469.

Cruise Line boss appointed as new president
of Clacton Lifeboat

May 1, 2013

THE managing director of Fred Olsen Cruise Lines has been appointed as the new president of Clacton Lifeboat Station.
Michael Rodwell, who lives in Clacton, accepted the honorary position at Clacton RNLI’s annual meeting on Tuesday, April 30, 2013.
The position has been vacant since the death of former president David Snell early last year.
Mr Rodwell, a member of Clacton Swimming Club and former member of Clacton Sailing Club, said: “It is a great honour to be asked to be the president of Clacton RNLI.
“I was born and bred in the town, so I know the high esteem in which the lifeboat station is held in Clacton.
“Fred Olsen Cruise Lines have supported the lifeboat over many years and look forward to helping the station over many years to come.”
Richard Walker, chairman of Clacton RNLI, welcomed Mr Rodwell on behalf of the station’s crew and volunteers.
Mr Walker said: “Through his professional role, Michael has ensured significant financial donations have been very generously given to the RNLI, and in particular Clacton Lifeboat Station, over very many years.
“As a member of the Clacton community, the lifeboat management group unanimously agreed to invite Michael to be our honorary president.
“I am very pleased that he has agreed to take-up the position."

Dear everyone,

Please find attached the Agenda for the Annual Meeting on Tuesday 30th April (7pm for 7.30pm), at The Flamingo, Holland on Sea.  The reports will given at the meeting - to save on stationery and postage costs.  We are hoping for a record turnout bearing in mind the Station's many achievements during 2012 and early 2013.

Please pass this message onto your colleagues in the Station's various sections; so we are inclusive and that those who as yet do not have access to email do not miss out on this important information.  Joff Strutt from the lifeboat crew will have a video and slide show running - highlighting the work of the crew and the lifeboats and the Station as a whole.  (please forward electronically to me any interesting photos you may wish shown on the evening).

NEW fundraising lifeboat shop launched thanks to the generosity of Clacton Pier

A NEW fundraising lifeboat shop is to be launched on Clacton Pier thanks to its generous owners.
Clacton RNLI currently has a shop at the lifeboat station in Hastings Avenue.
But the charity has now been offered the use of a unit on Clacton Pier free of charge, thanks to the generosity of pier owners Billy and Elliot Ball.
Derek Marshall, who volunteers as shop manager, said: “We are very grateful to the pier for offering us the shop.
“The pier attracts thousands of people every summer and hopefully some of those will pick up a few lifeboat souvenirs, helping to raise funds to save lives at sea.
“Everyone at Clacton RNLI, from the fundraisers to the crew, is a volunteer and we rely on the generosity of the town.”
Mr Marshall said a few more volunteers are needed to help run the shop, which will be open daily from 10am to 4pm.
Billy Ball, from Clacton Pier, said: “The pier has a long-running association with the lifeboat and it is a very worthy charity.
“It is something that is very close to our hearts seeing as we are out to sea and we see the good work they do throughout the course of the season.
“Having a shop based on the pier where footfall is much greater than Martello Bay will be a benefit.
“We have a spare unit that is due for refurbishment at some point in the future, so we are very happy for the lifeboat to use it in the meantime.”
The shop will be opened by Clacton MP Douglas Carswell, with the aid of RNLI mascot Stormy Stan, on Saturday, March 30, at 11am.
Local band No Reply, winner of Clacton’s Battle of the Bands contest, will be providing entertainment.
Anyone who would like to volunteer to work in the shop is asked to call 01255 428708

CHARITABLE Masons have donated more than £2,000 to volunteer lifeboat crews in Clacton.
Clacton RNLI was presented with the cash in memory of Alex Edwards, who died aged 68 last year.
A cheque for £2,232 was presented to crew and volunteers by members of the Jersey Masonic Lodge, in Middlesex, at Clacton Lifeboat Station, in Hastings Avenue, on Wednesday.
Richard Walker, chairman of Clacton RNLI said: “The money was presented in memory of Alex Edwards having been been raised by the Masons, his friends and family.
“Mr Edwards, who had been a member of the lodge for ten years, had served in the Royal Navy and also spent 26 years in the Metropolitan Police.
“He was a lifelong supporter of the RNLI and made regular donations.”
Mr Walker said their guests were shown around the boathouse and were able to see firsthand how their contribution would be used to maintain the lifesaving service at Clacton, which has been in operation since 1878.
